I know that the market will grow with the crops, and by the end of August, it will be filled with tomatoes and peppers and squash and beans and oh, everything that is good for you!
I was pleased to find the Vangs with their usual table full of clean and nicely displayed produce. I bought carrots, cabbage, radishes, two kinds of onions, green beans and beets. My something extra - the freebie they always give me - was a bag of red and green leaf lettuce.
Have you shopped at your local market lately? What did you come home with?

Mimi - I went to the market today and bought swiss chard, spring onions, baby zucchini and summer squash, eggs from the egg lady (that's what they call her) and sausages from the pig people (that's what I call them). I thought about the raspberries and basil, but they seemed a little expensive. I'm regretting it know of course.

Wahh, I forgot to buy radishes!
This morning: lots of tomatoes, cukes, beautiful red onions, green peppers (can you feel a gazpacho coming on? I can!), fennel, and a head of celery with the roots attached! Also beautiful beets, and raspberries.
Must be goin today!
Oh, lucky you~I went to our market and the produce was horrible. For living in Florida, one would think we were able to produce quality vegetables. I think the market I went to buys seconds~I have driven down south, in the areas of farming and I do see some gorgeous produce-I think the best is shipped out! Markets, what I miss most about my trips to Europe!
I wish we had egg ladies and pig people here, Mary!
Kalyn=, I stumbled across a radish salad recipe...now if I can find it again...
Fennel! Oh, Lydia!
Tanna, I look forward to hearing about it.
Jann, I always imagined Florida markets to be heavenly - too bad that is not the case in your area.
Aren't markets just such happy places? So full of color and life. I went to the market this morning and bought some shallots and arugula. Won't be needing much until Friday morning for a weekend getaway, so I'll be going again then. :)
Ah yes! The collor, the red of radishes, the orange of carrots - I love it all! It's all part of the food experience, Christine.
I went this morning because yesterday I had to go the once a month Paris in the Streets Flea Market. I bought spring onions, beets, zucchini, green beans, cucumbers, peppers and tomatoes. My egg and chicken lady is at the Saturday market so I missed her but I did get to see my soap lady and bought a fantastic new one that she just made called Lime Mojito. I can hardly wait for shower time.
Oh, Judy, I love when you can buy non-edible stuff at the market! That sounds like great soap. I bought something from a vendor called Soaps on the Bay or something like that - Lavender Herb.
Yesterday's farmers market offered up fresh-from-the-bay Kumomoto oysters, green and golden zucchinis, huge, sweet white onions, uncured garlic, a big bag of arugula (can't get enough arugula) and two 4" pots of cilantro for my greenhouse.
Fun post, Mimi!
I can't remember what I thought I wanted at my market, but I came home with some ahi tuna, yellow grape tomatoes and some lovely, unusual lettuce. (Rocket lettuce?) Looking at your post, I wish I had bought more!
Oh, Christine! That all sounds so good. I would love to have some cilantro growing on my deck (where I keep my herbes these days). I need to show up at your market...
Toni, I think I should pay yours a visit, too. We rarely get anything more exotic than Asian eggplant or brown eggs at our markets. Last year I did find currants...
Would you believe I haven't been to the market yet this summer? It isn't nearby and every Saturday morning we've had ball games. Ball games are now over so hopefully I can make it there soon!
Missed the mkt this week, but last week I bought bread:Rosemary Sourdough and Sundried Tomato and Herb. And the coolest new variety of cilantro. Tiny soft leaves, already de-stemmed and put into one of those mini sandwich bags for $1.00!!! And some dried organic fertilizer to re-constitute for the garden. And...
I LOVE the market!
I love a market but the "farmers market" we used to have where I live has gone - drats! I used to buy just the best garlic.
Lots of stories, tomatoes, zucchini, and dark chocolate-stuffed empanadas.
Yes, I do find dark chocolate even at the farmers' market. I am a little bit like a bloodhound that way. :)
But I confess that the stories are better than the chocolate.
I'm sure you're familiar with the Madison Farmers' Market - I'm there every Sat. & Wed. now. Beautiful selection, plus the whole experience - it's a huge part of my life in the summertime.
Green Zebra tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, sweet corn, white nectarines, tiny green beans, organic eggs....summer is the best! Gazpacho is coming on .....
Hi, remember me?
We have a local market every Saturday...yellow beans, yummy strawberries...wild flowers in old buckets..and the cutest little guy selling all of these...his older truck parked right behind his booth...he adores all the women shoppers out getting things for the weekend menus...
I buy it all...
I wanted to comment on your most recent post to say that I love green tea ice cream too...I think it's something I've tasted here in the States. But comments were not enabled for that post -- are you aware of that? I know sometimes weird things happen on Blogger...
Thanks, BC, I loved the green tea ice cream.
