Hot Chocolate on a Cold Night

We were supposed to get The Big One today, the blizzard that would halt life as we know it up here on the tundra.

Yeah, right.

It wasn't all that bad, but it was cold and I have been snuggling under a blanket most of the night, save for the moment or two I spent making hot chocolate, which did its best to warm me.

Do you have a favorite trick for enhancing a cup of cocoa? I'd love to hear it.

I wouldn't ever turn down a little splash of butterscotch schnapps in my hot cocoa!

Ksam, I like that idea.

Buttersocth Schapps, you say? Hmmm. Nice!

I rarely drink hot cocoa these days, though I do enjoy it as a cold milk drink in the summer time - with cream and/or ice cream floating on the top ;)

I've been known to add a pich of cinnamon to my cocoa.

Homemade marshmallows! Nothing else compares.

A pinch of cinammon is nice - a pinch of cayenne pepper is even nicer!

I'd forgotten marshmallows, Eileen! Yes - homemade!

Joanne, I am ashamed to admit I've never tried cayenne pepper in mine!

For me Mimi , I think the secret is in the cocoa powder you use. I have used many but my favourite is Ghirardelli from San Fran that I can buy here thankgoodness! I love their double chocolate.
I do not put in anything else "special" - a marshymellow would be nice if I had a packet but just plain is great!

I just bought Penzey's hot chocolate but haven't tried it yet (we FINALLY got our own Penzey's here in No. California). I like a pinch of cinnamon and have been know to throw in a splash of Kahlua.

That's true, Lady J. I will try Ghirardelli.

Andrea, I love Penzeys and try to visit there when I am in Madison. I'm not sure if they've got an Appleton, Wis., outlet yet, but perhaps soon.

Hot cocoa......Haven't even thought about it for a long time. It's raining here in San Diego right now, and I'm going to New Mexico for the holidays. I actually drive hundreds of miles to get my hit of winter! Hot cocoa...Yes. I think that's exactly what I will make when I'm in NM.

I think sweetened condensed milk may be the secret ingredient, Toni. But of course you must add a bit of chili pepper...

I have a family recipe for homemade cocoa.
THE BEST HOT COCOA EVER

One large container Creamora
One bag of 10X
Three can Ghiradelli cocoa ( one white mocha)
Two boxes (8 packets) of Hershey's Special Dark cocoa
One large box of instant milk

Stir all together til mixed.
use one third cup of mixture to boiling water
MAKES ALOT ( enough to give some away in pretty little canning jars with a ribbon)

What's 10X, Cyn?

I think I had had something similar.

Another reader contacted my via another site and suggested I try sweetened condensed milk. I intend to do this tonight.

I will let you know how it works.
