Caramel Apples and Saffron Leaves

As the beauty of fall starts to wane (as it does, inevitably, especially when it rains as endlessly as it has for the past 24 hours), we must snatch moments of charm and enchantment when we can.

Thursday was dull and gray. I had a meeting across town in a conference room of a large private marina located on the river. I arrived late, and was forced to squeeze my car in a tight spot along the bank of a narrow inlet. Descending from my minivan, I was greeted by a chorus of quacks from a colony of ducks, some mallards, others black, and two the color of fresh butter.

I stood there for a bit, mesmerized. It is not unusual to find ducks in my neighborhood, or in other places, nor is it odd to find Canada Geese (in fact they live here year long). Sometimes swans make their home in the reeds along the riverbank at the end of our street. But I never tire of seeing them, and hearing them.

Inside the meeting, there were caramel apples, heavy with pecans, and coffee to revive us from our afternoon stupor. I had no choice but to sit in a corner at the table squeezed in between a man I know slightly and a woman who is my fifth cousin. Before me was a window and through it I could see saffron-colored leaves, a lovely and stark contrast to the pale gray sky.

For a brief moment I felt content, as though everything was aligned for my pleasure.

Small things, simple things. But lovely on a weekday afternoon.

There are so many ways we can perceive our circumstances. What I love about you, Mimi, is that you took a gray day with a couple of tight squeezes and choose to focus on the ducks and the caramel apple. You chose contentment.

Thanks, Toni. But it's so much easier than being grouchy!

That's a gorgeous apple - enough to make any day brighter!

It did the trick for me, Katie. Tasty, too.

As you know Mimi Autumn is my favorite season. Even with the inky skies and hint of rain. It all makes for a contrasting canvas to the burst of autumnal shades on the trees.I take great comfort in Mother Nature's work of art. Too often we take our environment for granted. It is always a choice. Your glass is half full or half empty. I cannot imagine anyone living where you and I do and NOT being renewed with the season upon us. PLUS it's a a great time for foodies to cook those bubbling caldrons of harvest soups and roast hearty veggies.

I love Octobers in Wisconsin... Saturday we were so sick and tired of the rain and gray skies that we had in Chicago for... centuries.. that I said to my wife: let's go to Racine (her native town), have a Kewpee for lunch and go to North Beach to see the colors of the trees and the lake. As I expected, by mid-day when we reached Racine, the sun was out, the colors were flamboyant, the lake's various hues of blue, green and blue were more beautiful than ever, and we had the same contentment that you experienced farther north.
Have a great end of autumn.

Bonjour, Alain! While you were in France, we were experiencing that same contentment during our 4-5 days in Chicago. It was still summer there, even though we'd been experiencing hints of early fall for weeks. When we got back, fall hit us with full force. Our sunny days in the past month have been few and far between.

Travel in the fall can be confusing. We left Wisconsin last fall for 2.5 weeks in France that were summerlike, until the last few days. The Lot was turning, the Dordogne to the north was green, which confused us further.

No matter, I love France.

Your words are, once again, soothing, and remind me that grouchiness should not win out. Not when there is such beauty around us. Sadly, I think I'm a natural grouch. I have to work hard to overcome it. :)

Thank you, Kary. It was really good!

Christine, I cannot imagine you are a grouch.

one of my favorite autumn treats~it looks delicious! The hues, smells and chilly days of this season are some of my favorite. I miss that down here in Florida.

Jann, what you need is a fall bolt hole in Wisconsin!
