Farm Market Winding Down

The days have been mostly blustery this week, and gone is the sweet sun of September.

The weather points to a dull and lingering fall. This week's farm box was noticeably lighter.

Food is always a great comfort. To that end, we've been eating lots of stir fries and ratatouilles. Lots of potatoes roasted with herbs and olive oil.

Sunday night supper is pork chops with applesauce. Sometimes nothing fancy will do. Simple is best.

How about you?

We've had beef stew twice in the last week -- yes, and oftentimes simple is better. Vegetables are winding down at our farmer's market too -- but we're enjoying the fall squashes.

I roasted my first acorn squash last night. I love having a squash in the oven.

Today it was 74F in NYC and gloriously sunny, a perfect fall day with a light breeze in the air and colors on the tree leaves.

This day was cherished and celebrated with friends, a street festival, beer & funnel cakes.

CFarmer, that sounds great! We had spicy baked pork chops here with roasted potatoes, onions and peppers, and cole slaw and apple sauce. Nothing fancy. No wine tonight.

CFrench, we may be past those days. It's hard for me to believe that a year ago I was experiencing the most perfect day in Paris.

It seems that you and I have been making similar dinners, Mimi. Simple and comforting. Our autumn checked out early this year. It's colder and windy now. Winter is not far off.

My goodness, Christine, it's the same here in Wisconsin. I have been wearing a winter jacket the last two days. This is a bit distressing.

The upshot is, I hesitate to post what I am eating. It's definitely not blog-worthy.

I made a batch of vegetable beef soup last week and yesterday was my birthday so we went out for dinner and what did I order. Pork chops with risotto and braised cabbage. The mindset, it is changing.

Soup, soup and more soup. I've been waiting all summer to start making huge pots of soup on Sundays again.
