Apologies and a Big Storm

I've been absent the past month, and for that I apologize profusely. But a lot has been happening.

For one thing, I learned I have a wheat issue, something I have suspected for a while. It's scary, and a little frustrating, but there is ample help online, including a number of highly-esteemed blogs. I've done some lurking lately. Of course, I've been craving Christmas cookies. Still, there are a lot of good things I can still eat.

Secondly, there have been some other issues to attend to that have taken up a considerable amount of time. This is the time of year for both events and conferences, and this fall I've been on the road a bit.

Finally, I needed a break. Just mentally and emotionally. I love this time of year, the angle of the sun that burnishes everything and the color of the sky at sunset.

I forgot to mention the storm. We had a little state of emergency the other day. This photo shows my house four days after the storm. Looks like a Christmas card, right?

More to come....

It looks like a Christmas card -- it's beautiful.

I have a friend who is wheat intolerant. I'm sorry for there is wheat in so much food. There are alternatives (which I'm sure you're finding out about). It's amazing at how many people are wheat intolerant!

Luckily, I make a lot of things from scratch and eat low on the food chain. I eat very few processed foods, especially since I started blogging. My husband always uses cornstarch when he cooks, not flour. What has come as a surprise is how food starch is everywhere.

I've learned a lot just from hanging out online.

Gorgeous photo. It does indeed look like a Christmas card. Good luck on your food issues; I'm sure it can be trying.

Your home looks lovely in the snow. It sounds like you will be making many changes to your cooking style. It can be a good challenge I'm sure. My best wishes for the holidays.

I feel your pain, I was diagnosed with a wheat allergy earlier this year, thankfully, it's not a gluten allergy.

I'm learning to manage the symptoms and still have some bread in moderation.

The moderation though, is the hard part. :-(

Mimi - First of all, yes, your house looks like a Christmas card. I actually miss that white stuff living here in San Diego!

Second, wheat and dairy are the two most common allergens, so you've got plenty of company! Not that it helps when you're eying a baguette, of course, but there's an alternative. You can try bread made with either spelt or kamut - both are grains that people with wheat allergies usually tolerate quite well. Sadly, baguettes aren't usually made with them..;-(

What a nice photo of your home sweet home!

We have many stores in Quebec for you. More people than ever have the same problem.

Be careful and have a good time.

I'm glad you are back even if the news are somewhat less cheerful that you would like them to be in this festive period.
But have a Joyeux Noel anyway..
And keep in mind that "en toutes circonstances on trouve toujours des bonnes choses à préparer et à manger". Bonne chance during this re-adjustment period.

I understand completely your wheat issue. I have a wheat/gluten intolerance. Which is better than having Celiac's. But if I have too much wheat, I pay for it, not so good. But there are so many websites, food sites, and stores now that carry gluten/wheat free products, so that has been wonderful. The food brand Scharis a delicious product. Plus Pamela's as well.

Hi Mimi
As you may or may not remember I have been wheat free for nearly six years now and have felt so much better. I originally started off by just excluding wheat on advice from my nutritionist. The only grain I eat now is oats as the gluten is slightly different. I have had an occasional lapse when not realising there was wheat in an item but not had any major problem as the effects of wheat seemed to have cleared from my system. The only other problem is a slightly under active thyroid which apparently has links to wheat intolerance.
There are so many other products/flours around now which are just as tasty and probably better for us if the truth be known. Anyway after that short epistle
All the best for the New Year
Anne
