When I was much much younger, I imagined having a life that allowed me to linger in cafes over pots of chocolate.
The afternoons - as I imagined them - were dark and gray, but I would be protected from the elements inside a toasty little niche, reading a slender book of poetry and waiting - waiting for what? My tender imagination stopped there. I only knew that chocolate and dark days and romance belonged together.
My memorable moments in college often involved chocolate: The Thanksgiving afternoon I spent alone with Colette and a hastily-made chocolate souffle, the Christmas Eve a box of chocolate was delivered to my mother's house from a friend in Switzerland, the winter afternoon a friend and I shared a chocolate torte at the Ovens of Brittany on Monroe Street in Madison, the chocolate bars gobbled down between classes in place of real meals.
Sometimes I think it has been the idea of chocolate that matters as much as the smooth, dark taste of it. As I once sought a life of romance, so I now seek chocolate at certain moments. The fruit desserts I make at least 10 times a year - apple crisp or a blueberry pudding or a pear tart - will not do. Chocolate and only chocolate brightens a dark day.
For a time my little town had its own chocolate shop. A pair of artists opened a chocolaterie in a tiny building in the old downtown across the river. It thrived that winter, and then suddenly it was gone the next year. Now you can buy serviceable chocolate bars in supermarkets and drugstores from famous makers. It's not the same, though, is it?
Tell me your chocolate stories. The days are dark now, and short. It's chocolate time.

I love the way you write about your memories and feelings. I like chocolate, but never crave it. That said I would like to mention 2 places, ie The Chocolate museum in Biarritz http://www.planetemuseeduchocolat.com/en/pageLibre000100fa.html, and also I spent a lot of time at La Pâtisserie viennoise, 8, rue de l'École, in Paris, sitting in front of a creamy "chocolat liégeois". This place is tiny, and right in the centre of the Quartier latin (check out pix here http://www.google.ie/images?hl=en&expIds=17259,17315,23628,24472,26761,26849,26869,27147,27520,27744&xhr=t&q=%22patisserie+viennoise%22+rue+de+l'ecole&cp=37&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=959&bih=731) And BTW the Pear and cheese recipe rocked! I did this a couple weeks back when I was in PA>
Ooh la la! I know the street, but have not explored that far west.
I do have cravings once in a while, but they are less physical than emotional.
Mimi, va voir sur mon blog, je t'ai décerné un "award".
And yes that why I love your writing so much. You really have the knack for mixing emotions and sensations.

Merci, Daniele! Now I have a reason to go surfing for blogs.
I find myself spending more time online December through March.
The Thanksgiving Weekend is what gets me going! And I am going!
You are so kind!
I've been craving chocolate lately....
One of my treats, when we travel, is to stop at chocolate shops and buy - just a few...
The absolute best hot chocolate is in Spain - if you like dark hot chocolate, that is!
Katiez, with a bit of luck, we'll go to Bruges before the year is out to sample the chocolate (and beer) there.
Breathes there a woman with soul so dead, who never to herself has said, "I need chocolate!" I honestly couldn't pick out one chocolate memory, since chocolate has been a rather consistent theme in my life. I therefore have lots of chocolate memories - including the time my husband introduced me to chocolate liqueur. Oh, happy nites!
I love your childhood memory. I think I was sitting at the next table.
And I think I know that patisserie, because my sister and I stayed at the Hotel des Grandes Ecoles.....Petit monde
Ah, the patisseries of Paris! They never fail to draw my eye, if not my appetite.
Most desserts are too sweet for my tastes, but they look good.
My wife and I just bought our joint Christmas present (the latest version of the Breville panini maker that is really an indoor grill) and so we have agreed to just do stocking stuffers for each other for opening at Christmas. Ladies, I need some interesting chocolate ideas that will stuff a stocking!
Chef Dad, I'm doing the same thing for my husband: A stock full of chocolate. I have no real gourmet options in my home town, so my options are limited. (Yes, I could order online, but I am committed to shopping local.)
I'm buying chocolate from Dove, Lindt, Hershey and whatever else I can find: Kisses, bars, small boxes of stuff, chocolate-orange sticks, chocolate Santas, etc. Don't forget packers of hot chocolate, chocolate-flavored coffees, small hard candies, and even chocolate candles. There is a chocolate wine that tastes like hot cocoa with a hit that she might like.
Very nice post! You explain the relationship with chocolate very well :)
I do crave chocolate physically and emotionally. Emotional craving normally comes at nights when I need to sink in the couch with a cup of hot chocolate or something richer. Physical craving is more like during the day when I need to keep going from one task to another.
I do wish we had a chocolate boutique like in the movie Chocolate :)
oh oh oh, Debauve et Gallais on Rue des Ste.s Peres --the staff are not the least ruffled when you step in, spend 10 minutes to select just ONE delectable, then depart. On assignment with a very young aide in tow, we stopped daily at this historic gem. Don't miss it!
Lovely blog, Mimi
I wish I could open a chocolate shop, Ilke.
Aunty Belle, I think I know that shop!
Thank you both for the kind words. You have warmed my heart on a cold day up here in Northern Wisconsin.
Please visit again.
So much sweets. I've been craving chocolates so hard.
Both Mr CC and I love deep, dark, rich chocolate. When I want some without going to the fuss of baking something, I reach for Green & Black's organic dark chocolate with cherries bar. A small piece after dinner truly satisfies.
I hope you're having some relaxing 'downtime' this holiday season Mimi.
Sean, I join you in that craving.
Christine, we are all but snowbound today and I refuse to do anything outside the house - work, etc - so yes, we are relaxing.
I also like chocolate with blueberries in it.
Good to know I'm not the only person who dreams of chocolate!
I must have at least one chocolate dream a month - and I'm not talking daydreams!
Thanks for the ideas. I must say that notion of finding a store that knows how to please chocolate lovers rather than just sell chocolate is a good one. The store I ended up in had some good chocolate, but they were selling a product rather than an experience. And chocolate should be an experience.
Yes! Chef Dad, you are correct. Chocolate is like wine and beer and single malt scotch. It must be experienced. That's why it is so linked to other things, at least in my mind.
That afternoon I read Colette and finally succumbed to the craving for chocolate by tearing through my cupboards for eggs, sugar and chocolate for a souffle was one of the best times of my life.
